Kuwait is a small country in the Middle East located on the Persian Gulf, between Iraq and Saudi Arabia. It is a desert country with very hot summers and short and cool winters. The terrain varies little between flat and gently sloping desert plains.
In 2000, Kuwait’s population was estimated at 1,973,572, including 1,159,913 non-Kuwaiti citizens. There are several ethnic groups living in this country and only 40 percent of the population is Kuwait. People from neighboring countries in the Middle East such as Egypt, Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon, Oman, Saudi Arabia and Yemen make up 35 percent of the population.
In just two hundred years, Kuwait changed from a nomadic population to an urban one. The development of the urban environment has been heavily influenced by Islam, and Kuwaiti homes reflect the principles of Islam, as well as the influence of desert life and culture. Most houses are rectangular and arranged around a courtyard.
There are five levels of social stratification in Kuwaiti society and these distributions are based on wealth. At the top of the social hierarchy is the ruling family. Among them are the former Kuwaiti merchant families. In the middle of the strata are the ancient Bedouins, Arab desert nomads, who settled in Kuwait with the advent of the oil industry. Then the Arabs come from neighboring countries, and at the bottom of this hierarchy are foreigners.
Most marriages in Kuwait are arranged according to tradition. Marriages take place within clans, but not between social classes. Women, regardless of age, need their father’s permission to get married. Also, a woman cannot marry a non-Muslim man, even if a man has been given this privilege. Also, a woman can only marry one woman while a man has the legal right to marry four women.
All education is free for Kuwaitis and participation is compulsory between the ages of six and fourteen. While the government emphasizes the importance of gender-based education, most schools are segregated by gender after kindergarten. The definition of literacy used by the government is that a person must be over the age of fifteen and able to read and write. With this in mind, 79 percent of the population is literate, while 82 percent of men and 75 percent of women meet these criteria.
The government of Kuwait is a nominal constitutional monarchy ruled by the Amir. The constitution was ratified and implemented on November 11, 1962. Kuwait developed a National Assembly. However, this form of democracy was short-lived. In August 1976, Sheikh Sabah dissolved the assembly on the grounds that the legislation had been manipulated to increase the authorities’ private profit. As a political system based on a hierarchy of clans, nepotism reigns in the Kuwaiti government.
