Domestic tourists spent 114 billion liras in 2022 – Last Minute Economy News

The Turkish Statistical Institute has released the results of the “Household Domestic Tourism Survey” for the 4th quarter of last year and 2022.

Accordingly, in the 4th quarter of last year, 7 million 614 thousand people living in the country traveled. The total number of trips by travelers within the country with one or more overnight stays fell by 18.6 percent compared to the same quarter of the previous year and amounted to 8 million 719 thousand. Travelers spent 59 million, 561 thousand overnight stays in this quarter. The average number of overnight stays was 6.8.

When evaluated on an annual basis, the total number of trips in 2022 amounted to 52 million 327 thousand, a decrease of 0.8 percent compared to the previous year. The total number of overnight stays by travelers fell by 7 percent compared to the previous year and amounted to 426 million, 579 thousand. The average number of overnight stays was 8.2 last year.

EXPENSES RISE BY 97 PERCENT

Domestic tourist travel expenses increased by 65.8 percent in that quarter compared to the same quarter of the previous year, reaching 19 billion 58 million 768 thousand liras.

Travel expenses were incurred as personal or package travel expenses. 93.1 percent of these expenses were personal expenses of 17 billion 740 million 769 thousand lira, and 6.9 percent were package travel expenses of 1 billion 317 million 999 thousand lira. The average expenditure per trip was 2 thousand 186 lira.

Total spending on domestic travel increased by 96.7 percent in 2022 from the previous year and amounted to 114 billion 317 million 183 thousand liras. 90.6 percent of these expenses were personal expenses at 103 billion 543 million 55 thousand liras, and 9.4 percent of those were package travel expenses at 10 billion 774 million 129 thousand lira. The average expenditure per trip was recorded as 2 thousand 185 lira.

When analyzing the rates of change of travel spending in the said quarter compared to the same quarter of 2021, transportation spending accounted for the largest share at 31.8 percent, food and beverage at 30.7 percent, and clothing and souvenirs at 10.5 percent. When the change rates of these types of expenses are analyzed compared to the same period of the previous year, a 67.4 percent increase in transportation spending, 55.9 percent in food and beverage spending, and 75.7 percent in clothing and souvenir spending was observed .

When the annual distribution of spending types within travel costs is analyzed, transport costs have the highest share with 30.7 percent, food and drink with 30.5 percent and accommodation costs with 13 percent. Looking at this type of spending on a year-over-year basis, there was a 129.4 percent increase in transportation, 91.3 percent in food and beverage, and 82.3 percent in accommodation.

VISITING FAMILY RELATIONSHIPS IS FIRST

In the last quarter of last year, trips to visit relatives ranked first with 65.6 percent. This is followed by travel, entertainment, vacation at 22.1 percent and health at 5.3 percent respectively.

When travel goals are evaluated on an annual basis, visits to relatives come first at 59.4 percent, travel, entertainment and vacations come second at 23.1 percent, and travel for health purposes comes second. third place with 3.8 percent.

With 43 million 787 thousand overnight stays, those who traveled in the last quarter of last year mainly stayed with “friends, relatives”. By accommodation type, “own house” ranks second in terms of overnight stays with 7 million 151 thousand nights, while “hotel” ranks third with 4 million 465 thousand.

When the accommodation types are evaluated on an annual basis, travelers stayed mainly with “friends, relatives” with 288 million 905 thousand overnight stays. This was followed by ‘own house’ with 73 million 478 thousand overnight stays, and ‘hotel’ with 34 million 588 thousand overnight stays.
