For a healthy Ramadan, you should definitely get up for sahur.

Nutrition and diet specialist Özden Örkçü made recommendations regarding the correct and balanced diet of people fasting during Ramadan.

Nutrition and diet specialist Özden Örkçü stated that the body essentially works on proteins, fats and carbohydrates, saying: “A solid source of proteins, fats and carbohydrates is needed at this point. Foods such as bread and pasta are foods consumed to meet carbohydrate needs. Even opting for a wholemeal bread instead of white bread and pita bread in sahur shows that we choose our carbohydrate source as healthy. If there is trouble with eggs, there should be some kind of cheese in the sahur meal. Olives can be consumed as a source of healthy fat. Eggs should definitely be on the sahur table. Of course, greens and even fruits should not be neglected on the sahur plate. It should be ensured that milk and yogurt are consumed in the same way. Thus, a healthy sahur meal is planned. In fact, breakfast must have been transferred to the sahur.” said.

You should definitely have sahur.

Nutrition and diet specialist Özden Örkçü said most people wake up hungry in the morning and continued as follows:

“People go to sleep after 3-4 sahur. When they wake up and start the day, they get hungry. In such a case, the stomach empties prematurely. Therefore, it is necessary to choose the right food. When sahur is made with greasy fries, leftovers from the previous day and pasta, the day can start a bit hungrier. People who say, “I stay for sahur, I can’t get up at all,” are also divided in half. Those who fall asleep have trouble getting up. There are people who are patient until 12-1 hours after their iftar and sleep by eating a small amount, there are also those who get up before the sahur and go to sleep with a glass of water. This extends the fasting period from 16 hours and can even go up to 20-24 hours as they are fed with a single meal. During prolonged fasting, blood sugar can drop. Even a normally healthy person can experience discomfort during the day due to excessive blood sugar drops. For this reason it is absolutely necessary to make sahur.”

Fasting for 16-17 hours can cause hypoglycaemia.

Örkçü, who stated that while a person without health problems secretes insulin normally, insulin is secreted too little or too much. Hypoglycemia attacks can cause tremors and cases that require going to the emergency room. On the contrary, with the increase in insulin after iftar, people may experience sudden increases in sugar. Diabetic patients need to know what type they are because they disrupt the systems in the body. It would be helpful for them to consult their doctors about the correctness of their preservation. Fasting does not seem healthy for those who take 3 doses of insulin per day.

Those with kidney failure should see a doctor

Nutrition and diet specialist Özden Örkçü stressed that persons with kidney failure should definitely consult a doctor in the relevant field: “This can be a problem due to the filtration of this fluid and minerals and vitamins that are absorbed by the kidneys. The body can become too dehydrated. In such a case, it would not be right for kidney disease to fast, as the electronic balance of fluid being drained from the body is disturbed. Maybe they have a lot of intention to live spirituality. They do not see this as a reason for themselves, but on the other hand their health is deteriorating.”

Those who do not take more than two drugs can fast.

Örkçü said that fasting is healthy and said: “If the daily amount of calories is taken, fasting does not harm healthy elderly people who have no health problem or do not need to take more than 1-2 medicines per day.”
