For plastic surgeries, it is necessary to wait until the right age

Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery Specialist Prof. dr. Dr. Yakup Çil made statements about the ages at which plastic surgery should be performed.

BODY AND FACIAL DEVELOPMENT MUST BE COMPLETE

Expressing that the appropriate age should be expected in aesthetic surgery, Prof Dr Chill said:

“Completion of body and facial development corresponds to the mean age of 16-17 years in women and 17-18 years in men. This can vary from person to person. For this reason, it would be appropriate to wait for the expiration of this period for aesthetic surgery procedures other than surgical procedures requiring urgency in a person who has not yet completed his/her development. If the aesthetic procedure is performed before these ages, impressive development can occur in that part of the body. Thus, functional suffering will occur by affecting the development of the individual, and the aesthetic result may not be at the expected level.

WOMEN CAN MAKE IT EARLY

Talking about why women are less aesthetically aged, Prof. Dr. Çil said: “The development of the age limit in women is completed 1-2 years earlier than in men. Therefore, an aesthetic procedure that is considered appropriate for men at the age of 18 can be performed at the age of 17 for women.

“BREAST THETICS SHOULD NOT BE DONE UNTIL DEVELOPMENT IS COMPLETE”

Recalling that these periods are to be expected in breast aesthetic procedures, Prof. Dr. Çil said: “Breast aesthetics is one of the procedures to be performed after puberty. Hormonal changes that occur during adolescence become stable after puberty, and breast tissue and milk ducts complete development. For this reason, it would be appropriate to wait until the average age of 17 for women and after the age of 18 for men for breast aesthetic procedures. A procedure that must be done before this time can cause functional problems because breast development is not complete. The aesthetic appearance of a breast that has completed its development may change as development progresses.

FOR WOMEN IT IS MORE SUITABLE TO WAIT FOR THE AGE OF 17 FOR THE LIPOSUCTION PROCEDURE

To explain whether there is an age limit to liposuction (fat removal), which is one of the most commonly performed aesthetic procedures, Prof. Dr. Çil said: “For the liposuction procedure, it would be appropriate to wait after the age of 17 before women and after age 18 for men. A liposuction procedure that can be performed before these ages may affect the successful results after liposuction as the hormonal and developmental process continues to affect the adipose tissue.

Tummy tuck may be preferred after puberty

Expressing when the abdominoplasty can be performed, Prof. Dr. Çil shared the following information:

“It may be more appropriate to have surgery in post-puberty for abdominal prolapse that occurs after excessive weight gain and loss. If a woman who is considering getting pregnant is considering abdominoplasty, it is better to leave the procedure until the postpartum period to ensure that the results of the procedure are permanent.

AGE LIMIT MAY NOT BE THE SAME FOR ALL TRANSACTIONS

Emphasizing that the age limit is not the same for all plastic surgery procedures, Prof. Dr. Çil said: “These ages are different for the restoration of the ear of a child born without an ear or for special procedures known as as prominent ears among the people. Prominent ear repair can be done at 5-6 years of age before school, when the ear has reached about 70-80% of its adult size. Similarly, an ear repair, which can be performed by taking a piece of the ribs from a child born without an ear, can be done at the age of 5-6 before school starts.

TERMS REQUESTING EMERGENCY SURGERY

Underlining that there may be situations that require emergency surgery, Prof Dr Çil stressed: “For example, a benign cyst affecting the visual field must be operated on quickly so that it does not affect visual function. Similarly, benign excess skin causing congestion in the nasal area or benign swelling affecting the child’s toileting needs to be treated promptly. Basically, if a benign disease impairs the organ function of the person, it should be treated quickly without waiting for the post-puberty period. In cases that do not require emergency surgery, waiting for the specified ages will be beneficial for both functional and aesthetic results to be more successful.
