Liposuction is not a weight loss surgery

Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery Specialist Prof. dr. Dr. Yakup Çil made statements about liposuction. Emphasizing that surgical interventions for obesity may be necessary in cases of overweight despite dieting, Prof. Dr. Çil stressed, “Despite exercise and diet, fat deposits in the lower abdomen, waistline and hips cannot disappear. Liposuction is a suitable surgical option for people who are unable to remove the excess fatty tissue in these areas, even though they are not overweight. Although we have a weight close to normal weight, the fact that the adipose tissue in these areas is not decreasing is due to the fact that the adipose tissue is not the same in every part of the body. The adipose tissue in the foot and hand area and the adipose tissue in the hip area show differences and the adipose tissue in each area does not respond to food in the same way.

“Perhaps the most suitable treatment method”

Stating that fat distribution regions and accumulations differ in men and women, Prof. Dr. Çil said, “While the increase in adipose tissue in the abdomen and abdominal region is higher in men, the accumulation of adipose tissue in the hips and sides of the abdomen more common in women. After weight loss, the residual fatty tissue in these areas can cause difficulty in choosing clothes and cause visual discomfort in people. Liposuction is the most suitable surgical treatment for accumulated fatty tissue in certain areas.

Process time

Claiming that liposuction is the process of removing fatty tissue from the body using very thin cannulas, Prof. Dr. Çil explained how the procedure was performed as follows: “Very thin cannulas are placed in the subcutaneous area by means of very small incisions, and the excess fatty tissue under the skin is removed from the body using devices that create a controlled vacuum. way. The procedure can be applied to all superficial areas of the body. Liposuction is usually performed on the abdomen, back, waist, arms, hips, neck and under the chin. Prior to the procedure, the areas of the body where the fatty tissue will be removed are determined by means of drawings on the skin. Local anesthesia may be sufficient in small body parts and the patient must be asleep (general anesthesia) in liposuction to large body parts. Specially prepared solutions are injected into the area where liposuction will be performed. These solutions make it easier to remove the patient’s fatty tissue. At the same time, there are fewer bruises in the postoperative period, as the patient has less risk of bleeding during the procedure. With the local anesthetics added to the solutions, the patient feels less pain after the operation. The cannulas used during liposuction are placed in the subcutaneous area with incisions of about 5 millimeters in the skin. In the areas where liposuction is performed, fluid buildup, called edema, occurs after surgery. Swelling in the areas where liposuction is performed, which occurs due to edema, resolves spontaneously during the postoperative recovery period. At the end of the operation, specially produced liposuction corsets are fitted to the patients to reduce swelling in the surgical areas and allow it to pass more quickly. Although the wearing time of these corsets varies depending on the body parts, they should be worn continuously for about 3 weeks. The bruise that appears in the skin area after surgery will disappear on its own in about 2-3 weeks.

“Laser beams can be used”

According to prof. Dr Çil said: “Laser liposuction can be performed using laser beams. The liposuction technique, in which the fatty tissue can be removed more effectively by using ultrasonic waves, is called vaser liposuction.

‘Special corsets must be worn after surgery’

Pointing out that special corsets should be worn on the liposuction areas after surgery, explains Prof. Dr. Çil said: “In this way, the swelling passes faster and the shaping of our body can be more successful. After surgery, we should watch our diet and not overeat. We must exercise and avoid little movement. “Keep moving and exercising as much as possible can help the swelling go away more quickly.”

“Men can choose too”

Emphasizing that liposuction is a surgical procedure that can be performed in all seasons, Prof. Dr. Çil said: “However, having it done in the not very hot seasons can help us not to disturb the corsets we have to wear after surgery . The procedure can be performed on men and women of all ages over the age of 18. Liposuction can also be performed effectively on the benign breast enlargement area called gynecomastia, which can cause extreme discomfort in men. Liposuction is a successful surgical method that can be used on both sexes.

“If it happens again, at least 9 months must pass”

Stating that adipose tissue is also used in different body parts, Prof Dr Çil said: “Thanks to the stem cells found in the adipose tissue during the procedure, the removed adipose tissue can be prepared and transferred to body parts such as the hand and face . Thus, it can be beneficial to give different parts of the body a younger and more aesthetic appearance. It can be used to eliminate tissue deficiency in adipose tissue by transferring it to tissue deficient body parts. Liposuction can be done again on the same body area if necessary. If it is desired to be done again on the same area, it would be appropriate to perform liposuction after a waiting period of 9-12 months,” he concluded.
