Proper nutrition is essential after bariatric surgery
Dietitian Mısra Aydın emphasized that they should follow the nutrition program after bariatric surgery and said, “Obesity surgery is a very important tool in losing weight and improving health, but it is not a magic wand. Good nutrition is essential after surgery. Aydın states that rapid weight loss is achieved with the surgery, but there is a perception that some obesity patients can continue their old eating habits after surgery, Aydın said: “We see the situation of gaining weight after surgery, albeit a little. The reason for this is that the amount of food does not decrease after the operation and that there is not enough exercise. If the person sees the operation only as a mechanism and leaves everything to him, he can regain the lost weight.
“Separating solid-liquid foods is important”
Aydın underlined that the most important rule to follow for life after sleeve gastrectomy is to distinguish between solid and liquid food and said, “Not taking liquid half an hour before and after meals prevents gastric enlargement. Thus, the stomach volume does not increase and portion control is maintained for a long time. Frequent consumption of high-calorie and low-nutrient foods also causes weight gain. While satiety can be achieved with a 150g meal containing protein, vegetables and quality carbohydrates, small amounts of high-calorie foods such as chips, candy, chocolate or sugary drinks will favor both the amount of calories and weight gain. the necessary nutrients cannot be taken. “A balanced diet is very important,” he said.
“About 80 percent of the stomach is removed in obesity surgery”
Aydın gave the following information: “In obesity surgery, about 80 percent of the stomach is removed. Portions have been drastically reduced. Satiety is achieved even with a small portion, but stomach enlargement is seen in those who do not distinguish between solids and liquids, those who consume carbonated drinks and those who continue to take food after they are full. So there is an increase in portions. This is another one of the reasons for weight gain. In addition, since the carbohydrate and fat content of meals eaten out does not match those prepared at home, those who usually eat out gain more weight than those who eat at home. Those who eat little and often after obesity surgery continue to lose weight regularly. However, eating too much food in one sitting can cause stomach enlargement and weight gain.
