Specialist warns for summer: don’t wear glasses at all instead of fake sunglasses

Claiming that fake sunglasses cause various eye diseases, Ophthalmology Specialist Op. Dr Kholzoda Saidali said sunglasses should prevent ultraviolet rays, while glasses that do not prevent this should never be worn. Saidali noted that sunglasses, especially preferred in the summer months, should be used as a filtering measure rather than an accessory, and provided information on the dangers of fake sunglasses.

“THE HIGHER PREFERENCE OF FAKE SUNGLASSES IN TURKEY COMPARED TO OTHER COUNTRIES”

Kiss. Dr. Kholzoda Saidali said the following about the diseases that the sun’s rays can cause in the eyes:

“With the arrival of summer, the sun’s rays caused damage to every exposed part of the body. One of the organs most damaged by the sun’s rays is the area around the eyes, because the eye and skin tissue are thin. Unfortunately, although the ozone layer filters the ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun’s rays, enough light to damage the eye descends to Earth and can seriously damage the eye. UV rays can affect every layer from the surface of the eye to the back. While it causes dry front of the eye, allergic conjunctivitis, and tinnitus, it can cause enlargement of pus in people with tinnitus. In addition, one of the biggest causes of cataracts is the sun’s UV rays. These rays can also destroy diseases that cause permanent damage to the retina, which we call the yellow spot. That is why many people wear sunglasses in the summer months. However, the preference for fake sunglasses in Turkey is higher than in other countries. People need to be made aware of this problem.”

“I RECOMMEND PEOPLE WHO HAVE HAD A STATE RACTOPERY TO USE SUNGLASSES”

Dr. Saidali said: “When using fake sunglasses, there will be more exposure to UV rays, and many diseases caused by these harmful rays are on the rise. The risk of macular degeneration may also increase with these rays. Sun rays cause the greatest permanent damage to the retina. Therefore, other parts of the eye minimize the rays reaching the retina. Therefore, in our eyes, the lens has a filter function. I strongly recommend that people who have had cataract surgery wear sunglasses because the filtering function of the lens is reduced in people who have had cataract surgery.

“THE FILM LAYER DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FAKE SUNGLASSES AND ORIGINAL SUNGLASSES”

Giving information about the differences between fake sunglasses and original sunglasses, Dr. Saidali continued his words as follows:

“Original sunglasses use a film layer that blocks UV rays, while fake sunglasses use paint instead of film. Fake sunglasses do not protect the eyes and increase the damage from the rays. Therefore, it makes more sense to wear no glasses at all rather than fake sunglasses. The colored layer in our eyes, which we call the iris, has important functions in addition to the image, such as filtering the sun’s rays. When you step into a bright light, such as a ray of sunshine, an event called miosis occurs; The pupil shrinks, minimizing light transmission. When we wear sunglasses, the pupil dilates because we create a dark area there. As the pupil enlarges, light transmission also increases. So when we wear fake sunglasses, we increase the eye’s exposure to UV rays. It is less harmful not to wear glasses than to use fake sunglasses.”

“SUNGLASSES YOU CAN TEST AT HOME”

Dr Saidali said: “For a pair of glasses to be original, it doesn’t have to be a brand. You can test the purchased sunglasses at home using a UV flashlight. Some coins, such as the dollar, have spots that are only visible with UV light. Put the lantern on the money and put the sunglasses you put together, if the glasses are fake, what should be visible when the UV light is kept will remain visible because there is no filtering.

“OUR MAIN PURPOSE WHEN USING SUNGLASSES IS NOT TO PURCHASE ACCESSORIES”

Dr. Saidali said: “Our main goal when using sunglasses is not to buy accessories, but to minimize sun exposure to our eyes. It is not necessary to buy branded glasses for this, our priority should be glasses that can filter the sun’s rays. In addition, when choosing sunglasses, the facial structure and the area around the eyes should also be taken into account. Not only to protect the eye, but also to cover the eyes and eyelid, he said.
