The expert warned, be careful when entering the pool
Kiss. Dr Gültekin Koçun said swimming pools are usually cleaned with chlorine-based disinfectants to keep them clean and said: “One of the main reasons for pool infections to develop is the chlorine in the pool water. Chlorine is a disinfectant that disrupts the vaginal flora. It causes the death of beneficial bacteria that surround the natural structure of the vagina, allowing other organisms such as fungi to reproduce in the environment. As a result, it can cause infections. In other words, the fact that the swimming pools, the common areas of many people, are dirty and also over-chlorinated cause vaginal infections in women. Swimming pools not only cause vaginal infections, but also urinary tract infections. In women, a lower urinary tract infection, also known as cystitis, is seen because the urinary tract is short and the infections quickly reach the bladder through this short pathway.
“Infections can spread to the groin area if left untreated”
Referring to the fact that infections can spread to the groin if left untreated, Koçun said, “Natural bacterial organisms in the vaginal flora are women’s main defense mechanism against infection. Contact of these organisms with contaminated water, chlorine and even soap can lead to infections. Vaginal infections can occur in many different ways. The main symptom of pool infections is vaginal discharge. The diagnosis is made by looking at the build-up of the secretion and the culture results. These currents; They can be of light consistency, color and smell. Itching, stinging, and tingling sensations can also be observed in this area. In the treatment of urinary infections seen in women, the causative agent must first be determined. If this agent is fungal, treatment for fungi should be started and if it is bacterial, bacterial treatments should be started. The treatment should be both curative and preventive so that the problem does not recur. After a short treatment period, the patient’s complaints, such as discharge and itching, disappear. The main point here is to start the treatment in the early period. If treatment of such infections is delayed; Vaginal discharge can spread to the groin area and cause more serious infections. Because women’s genital systems open to the groin through the uterus and fallopian tubes. Infections can spread to the groin if left untreated.
“You should not stay in the pool for more than 30-40 minutes”
Koçun stated that it is not necessary to stay in the pools for too long and explained the points to be taken into account as follows: “Clean pools with an appropriate chlorine content are preferable. You must shower before entering the pool. You should not stay in the pool for more than 30-40 minutes. After getting out of the pool, the body should be cleaned of chlorinated water by taking a shower immediately. Swimwear must be changed immediately after leaving the pool. The vaginal area should not remain moist. As much as possible, the sea should be preferred instead of the pool. suspicion of infection; If there are symptoms such as itching, discharge, burning sensation, a doctor should be consulted without wasting time.
