Those who yawn all the time beware! It could be the disease behind it.
Ear, Nose and Throat Specialist Prof. Dr. Yavuz Selim Yıldırım, ”Yawning is an involuntary reflex, it can be seen as a pre-sleep preparation or a sign of falling asleep in a comfortable environment away from stress, that the parasympathetic system is active,” he said.
Yawning can be seen in people who cannot sleep physiologically, when you just wake up in the morning, people who have just come to bed, except for these, you may have seen people who yawn constantly. Beyond this physiological stage, it can be seen as a sign of disease.
The symptom of a sleep disorder is the constant yawning of people who cannot get enough sleep despite getting enough sleep and continue to yawn. Constant yawning is a symptom and indicator of diseases such as sleep apnea and cardiovascular disease that prevent oxygen from reaching the brain other than sleep disturbance. These people should see a doctor and get treatment as soon as possible.
While yawning is known to be contagious to the public, people wanting it repeatedly can be interpreted as a symptom of many illnesses, from a number of mental health issues to heart disease.
Prof. Dr. Yavuz Selim Yıldırım said, “A normal person will breathe through the nose with their mouth closed during sleep, and people with nasal congestion will start breathing through the mouth during sleep, and the throat area will close the airway.” .
When breathing is interrupted during sleep, oxygen is not getting to the brain and heart, increasing the risk of a heart attack. In other words, the brain that can’t get enough sleep due to sleep apnea (not getting oxygen) will show your body that it wants to sleep all the time.
People who yawn constantly should first be examined by an ENT specialist, if there are structural problems, they should be corrected, if there are no structural problems, they should be assessed with a sleep test and a detailed diagnosis made.
Sleep apnea patients wake up tired in the morning, sleep is not enough for them, they tend to sleep all the time at work, they have the symptoms of concentration problems, forgetfulness and irritability. People with sleep apnea fall asleep at the start of the vehicle and get into a traffic accident, and may suddenly fall asleep while sitting.
Once the diagnosis of sleep apnea has been confirmed with a sleep test, it can be treated with conservative surgery of the nose and throat area. Groups that do not benefit from surgical treatment may receive mask treatment at night while sleeping on their mouth and nose. A significant reduction in heart attacks and hypertension was achieved in patients treated for sleep apnea.
