Emphasizing that scoliosis is a common disease in society, Op. Dr Önder Taşkın said: “It is estimated that 3 out of 100 people in Turkey have scoliosis. It should not be forgotten that scoliosis can negatively affect the quality of life. It is important for scoliosis patients to receive psychological support, participate in social activities and express themselves,” he said, providing information about scoliosis.
“DIFFERENT METHODS OF TREATMENT CAN BE APPLIED”
Claiming that scoliosis is a disease caused by the curvature of the spine to the sides, Op. Dr. Taşkın said: “While the spine is normally in a straight line, in scoliosis the spine takes on a shape similar to the letter S. This can be caused by deterioration of the discs between the bones of the spine, weakening of the muscles or damage to the nervous system. Symptoms of scoliosis include back pain, fatigue, shortness of breath, shoulder or hip asymmetry, and hunched back. Early diagnosis is very important for the treatment of scoliosis. Depending on the degree of scoliosis, different treatment methods can be used. In mild cases of scoliosis, physical therapy, exercise, and the use of a corset may be sufficient. In moderate or severe cases of scoliosis, surgical intervention may be required. In surgical procedures, metal rods and screws are used to correct the curvature of the spine.
“WHEN SYMPTOMS ARE DETERMINED, A DOCTOR SHOULD BE CONSULTED”
Saying that the causes of scoliosis are not fully known, Op. Dr. Taşkın said: “Some factors are thought to lead to scoliosis. These include genetic predisposition, congenital abnormalities, hormonal disorders, rapid development later in life, and trauma. For the prevention of scoliosis, regular exercise, healthy diet, attention to posture and when symptoms such as back pain or asymmetry are noticed, a doctor should be consulted.
“SCOLIOSIS CAN VARY FROM Mild to Severe”
Kiss. Dr. About Taşkın, “Scoliosis in babies and children is a condition in which the spine bends or rotates abnormally. Scoliosis can range from mild to severe. People with mild scoliosis may only need to see their doctor regularly. Symptoms of scoliosis may include different heights of the shoulders, a prominent protrusion of the ribs, or a marked curve in the back.
