According to the Turkey – Oral and Dental Health Profile Research Report prepared by the Ministry of Health before the pandemic, dental caries is recognized as the most common oral health problem in the world. Dt. Fırat Toktamışoğlu explained the situations that cause tooth decay and explained what should be considered in oral health.
“Produces acids that damage tooth enamel”
Stating that the causes of dental caries are bacterial plaques that accumulate on the teeth, Dt. Fırat Toktamışoğlu said: “These plaques feed on sugar in food and drink and produce acids that damage tooth enamel. Oral hygiene, healthy eating habits, fluoride use and regular visits to the dentist are very important to prevent tooth decay.
“THE TEETH SHOULD BE BRUSHED AT LEAST TWICE A DAY”
Dt states that 60 to 90 percent of school-aged children and nearly all adults have tooth decay. Toktamışoğlu said: “About 30 percent of people in the 65-74 age group also have no natural teeth. To prevent tooth decay, it is necessary to brush the teeth at least twice a day. It is also very important to use an interface brush or dental floss. Paying attention to oral hygiene protects both dental health and general health. Brushing your teeth regularly reduces plaque build-up and strengthens tooth enamel. It also prevents unpleasant situations such as bad breath. According to data from the World Health Organization, more than a third of the world’s population lives with tooth decay. The easiest way to avoid this problem is to take care of oral hygiene.
“SUGAR CONSUMPTION IS ONE OF THE MAIN RISK FACTORS OF DENTAL CAPES”
Expressing the need to limit or if possible avoid sugary foods and drinks altogether, Dt. Toktamışoğlu said: “Sugar in food and drink is an important factor in the formation of dental caries. Sugary foods and drinks cause bacteria in the mouth to produce acid. This weakens the tooth enamel. Implementing a balanced diet consisting of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, dairy products and protein, drinking plenty of water and reducing sugar consumption is one of the important steps to take. Because sugar consumption is one of the main risk factors for dental caries.
“FLUORIDE CAN BE USED BY FOLLOWING THE DOCTOR’S RECOMMENDATIONS”
Claiming that fluoride is a mineral that strengthens tooth enamel and protects teeth from tooth decay, Dt. Toktamışoğlu said, “It is found in some drinking water, toothpaste and oral care products. In some cases, dentists may also recommend additional fluoride applications, such as fluoride gel or varnish. Fluoride is one of the most effective substances in preventing dental caries. It has also been scientifically proven that the use of fluoride toothpaste reduces the risk of tooth decay. Because fluoride ensures remineralization of tooth enamel and increases resistance to acids. I recommend using products containing fluoride regularly and following dentists’ recommendations.
“THE DOCTOR CHECKS AT LEAST TWICE A YEAR”
Claiming that regular dental checkups are one of the best ways to protect oral health, Dt. Fırat Toktamışoğlu said: “Dentist can diagnose dental caries or other problems early by conducting an oral examination and providing appropriate treatment to the patient. Therefore, it is necessary to see a doctor at least twice a year,” he said.
