Pointing out that there is an increase in the incidence of many cancers in Turkey, Akyol said: “It is very important to have information about the causes, symptoms and prevention of cancer. Smoking is a major risk factor for many cancers.” Smoking causes very important health problems. Colon and rectal cancer are the second most common cancer-related death rates in our country. Unfortunately, approximately 5,500 of our patients die each year as a result of colon and rectal cancer. Colorectal, or colon, cancer is deadly. But it is a preventable and treatable disease,” he said.
Pointing out that the lives of thousands of colorectal cancer patients can be saved with colonoscopic screening, Akyol stated that stool occult blood screening tests, which are readily available and free at family health centers and KETEMs within the Ministry of Health, are very important in detecting the disease. Akyol emphasized that people should undergo a colonoscopy in case of a positivity in these tests, and made the following warnings:
“People with a family history of colorectal cancer or colorectal adenoma polyps, breast, ovarian, uterine, cervical and gastric cancer, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease should be screened with direct colonoscopy, not stool occult blood tests. It is seen as a risk, especially for people over the age of 45. Therefore, anyone with risk factors should definitely sign up for screening tests. Considering the factors that increase the risk of colorectal cancer, factors such as age, sex, family history, heredity, and lifestyle come into play foreground Very important for protection.
